Course Description:
The idea of New Media has emerged out of the digital convergence of originally separate media; print, broadcast, audio, image, and film. This fusion, combined with the power the World Wide Web, has initiated an incredible explosion of possibilities for communication. In this course, students will explore the evolution of New Media and its current impact on society and culture. Simultaneously, students will produce their own multimedia works using the tools of the industry. The course is a series of lectures, demonstrations and Macintosh computer lab exercises. Assignments will explore concepts of motion and interactive design that are needed for effective web and multimedia project development.
Attention is placed on balancing technical skills with content within a framework that stresses a conceptual and experimental approach. Topics include; motion graphics, elements of graphic design, digital video effects, interface design, interactivity, sound and a survey of creative projects. The course will serve as an in-depth foundation to any student (artist, designer, author, teacher, professional from any discipline) curious about the creative possibilities of New Media. Upon completion, students will be prepared for further study and possible career paths in the field.
